Early Chinese screens featured hinged panels, just like our modern dividers, with artwork on each fabric panel within a heavy wood frame. Japanese screens, though, were much lighter and more portable. Often made of paper and featuring anywhere from two to eight panels, these elaborately crafted dividers caught the eyes of 14th century Western traders, though the use and collection of decorative dividers didn't really catch on in Europe until the 1800s.
Our modern room dividers have much in common with their ancestors; they are generally composed of two or more hinged panels, which, like their Chinese counterparts, can feature art or decorative woodwork.
Particularly useful in studio settings, room dividers can artfully enclose an area you'd like to be more private. Are you in the market for a room divider? Then we recommend that you visit iRoomDividers.com for their great online selection of room dividers.
