While often being overlooked, how your CD collection is stored and organized can make a big difference in how much enjoyment you get in listening to your music. CD storage and organization can be accomplished in a variety of ways.

Furniture

CD or media storage units are typically very affordable and can now be found in a variety of styles and fashions that will complement nearly any decor. Media storage units offer complete organization at a very affordable price.

Hardwood is used in the construction of higher quality pieces of media storage furniture but they are also fashioned out of everything from particle board to plastic. Many top-end pieces come with adjustable shelves, but most have built-in shelves that are meant for DVD or CD storage. Some furniture for media storage is also meant to hold the television and electronic components so it provides a central location similar to an entertainment center. These media storage cabinets also allow for access to cables in the back and sometimes include spinning racks for CD storage.

Organization

Although media storage furniture is the ideal way to hold your collection of CDs, organization is also key. Here are some ideas for organizing your CDs to prepare them for a media storage cabinet.

Alphabetical order can be the best way to organize your CDs. It can be time consuming to do, but putting your media in alphabetical order by title or artist is one of the best ways to find them later.

Make a master list of everything in your collection and store it in a safe place. If you loan a CD out, you can make a notation on the list so you know who has it. Store your master list in a safe place and update it as often as needed so that it remains current.

If your collection is very large, splitting it into a few categories can also make it easier to find the specific one you are looking for. They can be split by genre by dividing them into rock, alternative rock, jazz, country, big band, classical, or theater groupings. Then just alphabetize them in their individual categories.
