DVD Storage

How your DVDs are stored and organized can be big factor in how much eventual frustration you'll face when looking for a specific media title. DVD storage and organization boils down to the furniture or cabinet they will be stored in as well as the overall organization of your collection. Both factors are equally important and should be treated with equal consideration for truly effective DVD organization.

Furniture

DVD storage has recently been incorporated into many pieces of media storage furniture. While once being regulated to cheap furniture constructed out of plastic or particle board, high quality media storage furniture now can be easily found. Contemporary media storage cabinets are now fashioned out of hardwoods as well as high quality metals and other materials and can add an eye-catching look to any room. Media storage units act as central pieces of furniture rather than being relegated to computer desks or closets.

DVD storage units, and media storage furniture in general, typically incorporate a number shelves and drawers that are used to hold media titles. These shelves are often adjustable but some models have them built in at the size of standard DVD cases. Units can be found with any number of shelves and some units, particularly media storage cabinets, have doors so they can be closed when not being used.

Organization

Once the perfect piece of piece of media storage furniture is found, the next step is to organize your DVDs so that they can be found easily. Your DVD storage unit will hold all your DVDs, but if they aren't organized, you still won't be able to find what you are looking for. Here are some tips for DVD storage that will also be organized and user-friendly.

Before you start organizing your collection, get all your DVDs together in one central location. This will make things easier and eliminate the need to continually update your collection.

Keep all the original cases with your DVDs so that you can clearly see what they are. If you lose a case, buy a new one and create a label for it – loose DVDs are next to impossible to organize.

Split everything in categories by genre. Your categories could be something like comedies, dramas, musicals, cartoons, etc. or you can create categories that are more specific to your collection.

Create a master inventory list that you continually update. A current master list will tell you everything you have and where it should be.
