Not long after the telescope was invented, people began fastening two together to get an easier view from them. These early binoculars were far too unwieldy for normal use.

Around 1900, a German physicist named Ernst Abbe made a pair of binoculars using prisms. The triangular prisms each reflected the incoming light twice. This meant it was possible to make a shorter instrument. The two prisms also flipped the image upright.

Today, binoculars are available for a multitude of uses. Use a pair at a sports game to get a better view or take a close-up look at the birds outside. Getting a closer look is a lot easier with a good pair of binoculars.
