Caring for a Sundial

Classic additions to any garden, sundials catch the eye as they catch the sun.  With a little proper care, a sundial will stand the test of time, casting its shadow for decades to come.

Brass and bronze sundials

Brass or bronze sundials are dramatic.  Keep them fresh with an occasional application of high-quality metal polish.  This procedure helps maintain the original clarity while glossing the sundial's beautiful finish.  On the other hand, let brass and bronze sundials develop a natural verdigris finish.  This greenish coloring intensifies with maturity to give your sundial a truly antique quality.

Marble sundials

Stone is durable, but not indestructible.  Be wary of using acidic or abrasive cleaners on marble sundials.  To maintain a smooth, even surface, wash your marble sundial with a mild soap.  Follow the cleaning with a hardy rinse, and your marble sundial will shine.

It's normal for a marble sundial to develop mold or fungus growth.  A mild bleach solution and a good rinse will clear it up.

Cast iron sundials

A cast iron sundial is generally painted to protect the sundial from harsh elements.  But paints and lacquers do wear off, making the exposed iron vulnerable to rust.  Repaint or re-lacquer your iron sundial periodically to keep it vibrant.  Your local hardware store can give you the advice you need.

Aluminum sundials

Aluminum sundials are durable models requiring very little maintenance.  Powder coated finishes preserve their appearances with long-lasting protection.  An occasional cleaning with a mild soap and rinse is all your aluminum sundial needs to keep its top-notch beauty.

Timeless styles

Many cultures have influenced and improved the designs of sundials.  As such, the variety of sundials available for modern gardens are numerous and exciting.  A Masonic sundial brings intrigue to your yard.  If that's too much, try a light-hearted frog sundial.  Every tradition of sundial can be made from any material you desire.

With some proper maintenance, a sundial will grace your garden for a long, long time.
