This garden bridge is made for walking
Some decorative garden bridges are only for show.  However, foot bridges are specifically designed with use in mind.  Bridges are made primarily from three types of wood:

 

Pine:  This familiar wood stains to any color you like.  A bridge made of pine should be pressure-treated to increase longevity.

Redwood:  This popular garden bridge wood can be stained or left natural.  If untreated, redwood ages to a beautiful gray.  Stain at any time to restore its brilliance.

Cedar:  A classic material for garden bridges!  Resistant to rot and insects, this wood easily endures years of use. 

 

Maintenance on a wood bridge is easy.  Occasionally spray off excess dirt and grim.  Be sure to check under garden bridges to catch problems before they surface.  Stains and sealants are long lasting, requiring a refinishing about every two years.

 

Elements of style
Garden bridges come in two basic styles, each with four handrail configurations.  Varying landscapes and personal preference will determine which garden bridge style is right for you.

 

First, the garden bridge styles:

 

Standard:  Beautiful, practical, and subtle.  This style blends into the surroundings.

High rise:  This style draws attention to one particular area.

 

Handrail types come in four setting for either style.  Small garden bridges with low profiles of have no handrails.  Low handrails aren't actually useful, but delineate the sides of the garden bridge.  Single and double handrails are useable, and refer to the number of rails on either side of the garden bridge.

 

Garden bridges come in lengths from six to sixteen feet.  Widths usually accommodate a single person, but extra wide models are also available.  Some garden bridges also come with fixtures for nighttime lighting.
