Simple Solution
Putting up a trellis is a step in the right direction when you want to separate parts of your yard or garden. A trellis is an inviting focal point to any area around the house. Trellises can be purchased usually at nurseries or hardware stores and are relatively inexpensive. Another option is to build a trellis yourself. This task may sound daunting at first, but it really is not that difficult. Below we'll give you some information on what styles are out there and some advice on how to build your own.
The Materials
The materials that can be used to construct a trellis are virtually endless so long as the structure maintains its burden and meets your aesthetic goals. Look at the most popular materials here:
Wood: The most popular material for building a trellis is wood. (1) Red cedar is an attractive, sturdy and excellent choice, but a bit expensive. It can be painted, but a clear sealer is suggested to preserve the natural color. (2) Pressure-treated lumber is a durable lower-cost option, but it is not nearly as attractive and it does not take paint well. It has a high moisture content allowing paint to peel and blister. Perfect for a rose trellis although plastic is becoming popular.
Metal: Unless you're a welder, you probably will not be constructing a metal trellis. If you're in the market to purchase one, look for metals that do not rust easily like copper, galvanized steel, wrought iron, or even aluminum. The cost of each will vary and should be affordable.
Fixtures: To keep it all together you'll want to use stainless steel wood screws or tying wire in order to prevent rusting.
Construction
With the above materials and some determination you can begin to build a variety of trellises from rose trellises (fan or ladder style) to free standing trellises.
First, clear the area, make all required measurements, and dig post holes if necessary.
Second, raise the cross pieces of the frame and attach the lattice work where desired.
Third, complete the area with the desired plants and some additional landscaping.
