Maintaining a Garden Bridge

Installing a garden bridge brings a unique accent to any landscape.  They also take abuse from extremes in weather and use.  Protect garden bridges with a few maintenance basics, and it will deliver years of enjoyment.

Stains and seals

The most fundamental step in caring for garden bridges, stains, and seals provide a shield that should last through the season.  Here are some basics:

Oil-based stains:  Preserves decorative garden bridges while enhancing color.

Multiple coats:  Apply a few coats to a garden bridge to maintain deeper color and longer lasting protection.

Sealants:  Provide wood bridges with a layer of resistance to harsh elements.

Combinations:  For convenience, look for stains and sealants that are combined into one product.

Re-staining and sealing:  In general, re-stain and seal garden bridges every two years, but do not hesitate to do it sooner if defects are apparent.

That rugged look

Redwood ages well when left unfinished, becoming silver-gray after a few seasons.  Keep in mind, however, that while the weathered look is attractive, your garden bridge will be compromised.  Routinely stained and sealed garden bridges hold up longer than bridges that run a natural course.  Besides retaining a vibrant color, stained and sealed garden bridges resist rot, mildew, insects, and splintering.

Easy regular maintenance

Give garden bridges a quick exam after each season.

Check that all the planks fit snuggly together and provide ample stability.

Check underneath the garden bridge for problems that would otherwise avoid notice.

Garden bridges that are sealed on a regular basis can be sprayed down with a hose throughout the year.

Soapy water followed by a clean rinse gives garden bridges a thorough cleaning.

A little maintenance will go a long way.  Periodically give a few minutes to maintaining garden bridges, and they will deliver years of service to your beautiful yard.
