Lawn mowers are as synonymous with summertime as sun-block. Many young children earned their first dollar mowing lawns and some have even gone on to run successful lawn care businesses. Though it's rarely a fun task, mowing grass is necessary to keep any outdoor area looking good.

The lawn mower dates back to the 1830s. A British engineer, Edwin Beard Budding, patented the design of an inelegant contraption to cut the lawns on sports grounds and expansive gardens. Similar designs began mass production in the 1850s, including steam powered models. The rotary mower that we know today was not developed until engines could be made small enough and powerful enough to run the blade at a high speed.

Today, lawn mowers use power for both cutting and moving. Self-propulsion is a common feature, which actually helps the overall cut. Lawn mowers can also change height to adjust the cutting length.

There are a few different classes of mower, from the basic rotary mower to the industrial riding mower. No matter how you get the job done, a freshly mowed lawn is a sign of pride and beauty.
