The modern weed eater is a powerful garden tool, meant to supplement the lawn mower. Weed eaters are meant to trim hard-to-reach areas, such as corners and around fences or posts, where mowers can't reach. Weed eaters also are used to quickly cut down overgrown plants and grasses.
The basic weed eater design is a rotor at the end of a pole, which spins nylon wire around at high speed. This spinning wire is very effective at cutting and can even take the bark off of trees.
Weed eaters come in three different classes: electric, battery, and gas powered. Small lawns may be fine with an electric motor, which requires an extension cord, but most people prefer the freedom of gas powered weed eaters. Some models are also equipped with a rotating head so the wire spins vertically, for edging the lawn.
