A sharp edged tool Is the best way to avoid injury
There are a number of reasons to purchase a knife and tool sharpener. You can choose from a number of different types in order to fit all of your sharpening needs, from a diamond tool sharpener for keener edges, to an EZ grip tool sharpener for heavy-duty edges. Also, keep in mind it isn't just the gardening and workbench tools that need your attention; kitchen knives, sheers and sewing scissors also need to be sharpened. There are even handy carpenter's pencil-sharpening tools to help you avoid dulling your utility or pocketknife.
Why is sharpening so important?
Safety - Believe it or not, the safety of using an edged tool is the number one reason you should sharpen them regularly.
Chainsaws - A chainsaw blade that binds up often is much more likely to break than one that is kept well-maintained.
Knives - When using a dull knife, there is a lack of smoothness, which increases the likelihood of slipping with the knife in a way that might cut you or those around you.
Chisels - When chisels are not sharp enough for the job, they tend to splinter either the tool or the object you are trying to chisel. Either way the fast moving debris can cause injury.
Inspection - Sharpening a tool also provides you with an opportunity to visually inspect it. Sharpening draws the attention to the tool before you use it.
Efficiency - A sharp tool will make much shorter work of a hedge or a cord of wood.
Axes - We often overlook the need to sharpen an axe. One thing is sure: the amount of effort that goes into splitting wood for the fireplace or BBQ is greatly reduced by a well-maintained axe.
Scissors - How many times do you have to ruin something before you realize you have an old, dull pair of scissors? One quick way to keep an edge sharp is to cut some strips out of some 400 grit sand paper.
Chisels - Fixing that doorjamb will take forever with a dull chisel. You also need a good cut to ensure proper latching.
Shovels - These can be a nightmare to use if they don't have a proper edge.
Knives - Dull knives can mess up a number of jobs, from cutting carpet, to turning a Thanksgiving turkey into a shredded mess.
Fortunately, sharpening your tools is not as foreboding a task as one might think. There are a number of devices that can have you sharpening like a pro in short order. Pick them up at your local home improvement store.
