Do as the Romans did
The history of the game of Horseshoes goes back all the way to the idle hours of Roman soldiers. For leisure, they would toss metal rings, trying to place them onto stakes pounded into the ground. Whether these rings were actual Horseshoes is not known for certain, but this is generally accepted as the beginning of the game of Horseshoes.
Flash forward a couple thousand years to today. Horseshoes is still a beloved leisure time activity all over the world, especially in North America.
The playing area and pit
A horseshoe playing area is a larger are than you might think. While many people assume all you need is a pit, some sand, and a metal stake, official rules declare some more specific dimensions.
An official horseshoe playing area is 48 by 6 feet. On either end is a pitchers box, which measures 6 feet from the end (thus, the aptly named pitchers box is a square). In these pitchers boxes are three key components to the game of Horseshoes: the pit, the pitching platform, and the stake.
The pit should be about 35 by 70 inches. It should be filled with sand or loose dirt. If you are simply loosening the dirt, try to go about 3 or four 4 inches down. Any less and the shoe won't have a soft enough place to land; any deeper and it will be difficult to anchor your stake.
The stake should be a 36- x 1-inch rod. Drive the stake into the ground until you have about twelve to fourteen above the dirt surface.
The pitching platform will perhaps be your biggest task. For a casual shoe tosser, the ground on either side of the pit may suffice. But if you are looking to go by the official rules, a wood (or other material) surface will be needed. Each platform, according to official regulations, should be 18 to 20 inches in width. You will have two platforms at either end of the playing area, flanking each pit.
Exceptions to the rules
Official rules state that the platform may be extended up to ten feet from the pitchers box. This is a great thing to keep in mind if you plan on having any younger players joining the game.
