Bocce Courts

Join in the fun!

Bocce is a popular game due largely to the fact that it can be played on any level surface by anyone willing to give it a try.

Bocce courts recognized as official court surfaces are geared more toward serious competitors. Official bocce courts have rigid walls bordering the four sides of the court and support games that tend to follow stricter rules than recreational bocce.

Games played outside of official bocce courts, often called "Backyard Bocce," can take place almost anywhere - in parks, at the beach, at a campsite, on your lawn, or even on your driveway.

Dimensions

Individual bocce courts are typically unique in design and construction when compared to each other. Choice of building materials and playing surfaces and even dimensions of bocce courts may vary from court to court.  Typically, bocce courts are approximately 60 to 90 ft. in length and approximately seven to 14 ft. wide but these dimensions can be easily altered to fit the area you have available and your playing expertise. Traditional bocce courts have wooden boards approximately 10 in. tall surrounding them.

Construction

If you are a serious bocce player, building your own bocce courts will allow you to play whenever the urge strikes. The playing surface should be the primary concern when building your own bocce courts. Bocce courts made with a dirt surface are simple to construct and maintain. However, making bocce courts using a premium surface such as a bulk oyster blend will have the advantages of fast play, minimal bounce, and easy maintenance.

Besides the playing surface, there are many important details to consider when building your own bocce courts:

Do you want to build back walls to use for rebounding?

Will you include additional accessories such as ball racks and a scoreboard in the court's design?

Do you want to install lights so you can play at night?

Do you want to cover your court with some kind of canopy so you can play in inclement weather?

Bocce in a box

Planning perfect bocce courts is easy but you may want to hire designers and builders to help square away all the details. However, if cost is a consideration, you can buy kits and how-to CDs that walk you through step-by-step instructions to help make building your own bocce courts easier.

Because they are relatively easy to build and cost very little to maintain, bocce courts are becoming more commonplace. Bocce courts are springing up in countless parks, schools, and recreation centers, making it easier than ever to play!
