Care and Cleaning of Hammocks

Keep your hammock clean!

If you want your hammock to last, you want to keep your hammock clean and properly cared for. The simple steps below will ensure that you will enjoy your hammock for years.

Mechanized

Fold the hammock in half by holding the end rings and bringing them together. Use string to tie the hammock together just below the rings.

Tie twice more, once in the middle of the folded hammock, and once at the bottom of the hammock. The ties prevent the strings from tangling, and keep the metal rings out of the string bed.

Place the hammock in a pillow case, and tie the pillowcase closed. Tie it securely, as the washing machine has will put considerable stress on the knot, and you do not want the hammock to come out of the pillow.

Use mild detergent with no bleach. After the washing, remove and untie the hammock. To dry, hang up the hammock, unfolded and spread out.

Old fashioned elbow grease

Hold one metal ring in each hand and bring them together to fold the hammock in half. Tie the hammock together just below the rings. Tie the opposite end as well, and once in the middle. This is done to prevent tangling of the rings in the strings, and tangling of the hammock strings themselves.

Immerse the hammock in a bathtub or large sink filled with water and a mild detergent. Do not use bleach. Agitate the water until the hammock is clean. Afterward, untie and unfold the hammock and spread to dry.
