Choosing Outdoor Furniture for Your Personality

Sometimes we get so involved in decorating the interior of our homes that we forget about the exteriors. In many cases, people think of outdoor furniture as a necessity, a boring addition to the porch or patio in a yard. However, your outdoor furniture doesn’t have to be dull at all and can reflect your taste and personality just as well as the furniture inside your home.

When you choose the outdoor furniture for your home, you should start by reflecting on your interests. For example, if the furniture is for your backyard – perhaps to accessorize a pool or to entertain guests during a garden party – think about how you use your backyard and how it makes you feel. Maybe you have a vegetable garden, where you’ll have vegetables in bright greens and peppers in bright reds and yellows growing. This can be your inspiration for your outdoor furniture. Choose a patio set that matches the colors of your vegetables, or if you have a flower garden, perhaps an umbrella with your favorite type of flower as a design is an option.

If you are a non-traditional type of person and have decorated the interior of your home in a very unique way, say with Fashion Bed Group or Kathy Ireland Furniture, there is no reason to remain traditional with your outdoor furniture. Instead of a standard patio set or lounge chairs, you might like to have a hammock or tire swing in your backyard. There are no rules dictating what you can or can’t do for your own delight. Maybe you want to be really creative and purchase some specialty items, like stools in the shape of mushrooms or a table carved to look like a serpent wrapping around over and over again.

Your options for outdoor furniture are limitless. If you can afford custom work, have a carpenter build an old fashioned rocker to decorate your front porch or a porch swing for you and your loved ones to enjoy as you watch the sun set. If you are crafty, you can even make your own outdoor furniture that is quirky and unique using scrap metal or wood, some paint, and maybe some cloth. Never settle for something that you find unexciting, and while you can welcome the advice of others, never take their advice simply to make someone else happy. Your outdoor furniture should be for your pleasure.

There are so many ways to add personality to your outdoor furniture. If your patio set has padded covers for the seats, you can always recover these with a material and pattern of your choosing to make it more “your style”. And if you happen to purchase your furnishings at a garage sale (or even two), it’s okay if the pieces don’t match. You can leave them as they are and chalk it up to your eccentricity, or you can repaint, sand, recover, and do whatever else is necessary to make them match. Never settle for something you don’t want just because you spend less time using your outdoor furniture than the pieces inside. Make sure that you are comfortable and happy with your exterior decorative choices.
