Teak Offers a Lifetime of Enjoyment For Any Family

by Michael Usry

One of the most functional and beautiful woods available in the world for furniture is Teak. The use of Teak wood is not new; it has been used for centuries by man because of its natural qualities. Early ship builders used teak wood because of its high oil content, which made it water and rot resistant. Furniture makers in the Victorian era were the first to experiment with teak for outdoor furniture and it has been in wide use ever since. Perhaps one of the most amazing qualities about teak furniture is how long it can last. Some outdoor park benches in European countries have been in use well over a hundred years! When you think about the fact that it's stood up to the elements for that long, you can see why it's an excellent choice for your own outdoor wood furniture.

Teak furniture is ideal for home use not only for its incredible durability but also for its lasting texture. Many homeowners with wood furniture prefer teak over any other wood furniture because it's smooth surface even after years of outside exposure. If surface stains appear after exposure to the outdoors, you can refinish the surface with a fine sandpaper and make the stains go away while bringing out the luster of the wood. If left unfinished, teak will eventually get a smooth gray tone on the surface which is comfortable to sit and relax in. Some people will apply several coats of teak oil to their patio furniture. This can prolong the finished surface on your furniture and help seal in some of the color. You may need to reapply a coat of the oil after several years as the furniture starts to get weathered, but this can be done by even the beginning furniture owner.

If you purchase teak outdoor furniture and do decide to stain it, be sure to apply several coats of the stain or protectant before the teak wood starts to age. This will help seal in the luster of the wood better and make a more lasting application of the coating. Once you've done that, you and your family should be ready for years of maintenance-free patio living in comfort and style.
