Finding the perfect patio umbrella

As you shop for a patio umbrella, there are few things to consider besides style. Here are a few items to keep in mind to ensure you find the right patio umbrella for you.

It's all in the frame

Patio umbrellas are available with either a metal or wood frame. When choosing which type of patio umbrella frame is best for you, be sure to think about where you will be using it.

The major difference between the two types of patio umbrella frames is generally the opening methods. For example, metal patio umbrella frames usually open by using a crank lift or push button tilt, which allows the patio umbrella to be tilted in several different positions. A patio umbrella with a wooden frame typically uses a pulley system of sorts to open, which can limit the number of positions and rotating capabilities.

What about the tilt?

When it comes to the tilt of a patio umbrella, there are three different options: collar tilt, crank tilt, and push button tilt. The collar tilt is probably the most popular one for a patio umbrella because of its simplicity. All you do is simply rotate the collar on the patio umbrella frame to the desired tilt position. With the crank tilt, you use the crank to position the patio umbrella whereas the push button tilt requires you to hold the button and make the desired adjustments.

Choosing a size

It's important to take the time to think about what size of patio umbrella you want for your home. A good rule of thumb to use when shopping for a patio umbrella is that your patio umbrella should be five feet larger than the space you want to keep in the shade.

The right material

There are many different types of patio umbrella fabrics to choose from including vibrant colors and funky patterns. Most of the fabrics used for patio umbrellas are weather proof and UV resistant.
