Shoes for your pot
Pot feet provide a functional purpose for the home gardener. Pot feet are used on the bottom of your potted plant to raise the surface up off the ground. This allows for the maximum water drainage while also creating air flow that will dry the surface below. If you have a wood deck or a patio made from masonry, pot feet will prevent water stains and mildew and should be considered essential.
Pot feet as a decoration
Typically, pot feet come in sets of three or four and can be crafted out of nearly any material. Terracotta clay, steel, stone, and plastic, as well as many others, are all materials that pot feet are available in. To add a visual touch to any home fashions, decorative pot feet can also be found in a variety of styles ranging from Egyptian pot feet to a simple ceramic pot with feet.
Many hand-crafted pot feet are also available that can add more elegant touch to your home. These pot feet are also available fashioned out of a variety of materials and can also be customized for your specific home decor. Pot feet crafted to look like a variety of different animals are also available including ducks, toads, birds, rabbits, and others.
Pot feet functions
Pot feet are used to raise the bottom of the pot about an inch off the ground and, while protecting your deck, patio, or floor, are also important for the care of your plant. While allowing for better drainage, pot feet also stop insects, such as ants, from crawling into the plant's water drainage hole. This protects the roots and soil for unwanted guests. Pot feet also help to prevent frost damage in the winter as well.
Make your own
Creating your own pot feet can also be an excellent home craft project that is ideal for all ages. As the commercial manufacturers do, pot feet can be made out of nearly any material available as long as it is sturdy and will hold the weight of the pot. Many people make rudimentary pot feet out of plastic PVC pipe cut to the right height, or out of carved wood. Polymer clay can also be shaped and then dried for a more creative look.
Regardless of what your pot feet are crafted out of though, make sure they are at least an inch tall and that you have three or four of them for each plant to provide the correct amount of stability.
