Building Your Own Plant Stands

Beautiful accents, endless variety

If you are looking for a unique way to display your plants, consider creating your own plant stands. Constructing plant stands at home is less expensive than purchasing plant stands from the store and is definitely more fun.

The first rule is there are no rules

The best part about making your own plant stands is that there are endless possibilities for creativity. You can make plant stands as simple or as ornate as you like.  To help you get started, here's one easy idea for plant stands that use terra cotta clay pots.

Simply turn a terra cotta clay pot upside down and stack its saucer on the top.

Experiment with stacking different size pots until you get your desired height.

Decorate the pots by painting, stenciling, or even beading them.

Once you finish decorating your new plant stands, be sure to seal the pots with a clear acrylic sealer or polyurethane.

You can also find kits at many home improvement stores that provide all the instructions and materials needed to build plant stands, but allow you the freedom to give them the look you want.

An artistic touch

Often, adding a small decorative touch to your existing plant stands is all you need to give them a whole new life. Try painting a lovely scene of leaves and flowers or adding decorative tiles to your old plant stands to give them the look they've been missing.

Function over form

To build more practical plant stands, try using simple materials. For example, you can use ordinary PVC tubing to build the framework for sturdy and inexpensive plant stands without a lot of fuss. Simply sketch out the design you want for your plant stands and figure out the measurements.

Some other questions to answer before you start building plant stands include:

How many plants do you want your plant stands to hold?

How big are the plants? How much room will they need to grow?

Do you plan on incorporating any lighting into the plant stands? If so, how much space should you allow for the lights?
