One consideration that should go into choosing the right plant stand is the type of plant the pedestal will support. The size of the plant stand needs to be proportionate to the plant itself. A small ornamental cactus placed atop a tall, wrought iron base might look out of place. But such a pedestal would be perfect for a large, flowing fern.

Plant stand color and construction

This kind of base would be perfectly appropriate for a hardwood floor, however.

Size is another important detail. Make sure the top of the stand is large enough to accommodate your plant's container. The plant's pot shouldn't take up the entire top of the stand. A lip of at least two or three inches around the entire base of the container will properly support the plant and help keep your stand stable.
