Decorative Pot Feet

Dress shoes for your pot

Decorative pot feet are available in a variety styles and are crafted out of nearly material imaginable. Terracotta clay is one of the most popular materials for pot feet and it is used to make Egyptian pot feet as well as colonial and Corinthian versions as well. While many classic styles are available, pot feet can also be found in a variety of animal shapes including hedgehogs, birds, rabbits, frogs, turtles, and most others as well. In addition, decorative pot feet that look like actual feet can also be found for a more irreverent touch to your garden.

All sizes of potted plants can be accommodated with decorative pot feet and many are hand-crafted as well. Pot feet can be a large or small but should always be at least one inch high so they provide adequate drainage and aeration for the plant. At least three or four pot feet should be used, per plant, so that the plant is stable and secure. Decorative pot feet are designed for use with both flower pots and troughs; although with troughs, three pot feet are needed rather than four to provide adequate stability.

For those more adventurous or frugal, pot feet also are made easily on your own or as a fun family craft activity. Rocks, marbles, pipe, or even checkers or dominoes can be improvised as a pot feet in jiffy and, when combined with vivid colors, can add a unique touch to the style of your home. When crafting your own decorative pot feet, make sure that it is firmly attached to the bottom and won't come loose.

While decorative pot feet can add a stylistic feature to your decor, the practical functions they serve shouldn't be forgotten. Pot feet need to raise the pot off the ground at least an inch. This lets water drain while also allowing the surface below to dry. Many wood decks, as well as surfaces crafted out of masonry, will develop water stains and mildew if a potted plant is allowed to sit directly on it. With relatively little expense, pot feet eliminate this problem while providing a design feature as well.
