Hanging kitchen baskets

A hanging basket in the kitchen is a great way to create more functional space while making it attractive at the same time. Most of these hanging baskets are fashioned out of wire or stainless steel mesh and are two or three tiered so they can be used in a variety of ways. Hanging baskets in the kitchen are ideal for fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fresh herbs. Fruits and vegetables will still ripen in a hanging basket while fresh herbs are allowed to dry before eventual use.

While it is typical to see potted plants indoors, they can also be used in outdoor gardening and on decks and patios as well. When combined with a hanging basket, potted plants or flowers can add a unique and pleasing look to your outdoor space. Hanging flower baskets are typically sold in wire or plastic designs. Wire baskets are made to be used with peat or moss while plastic models can be used with potting soil. Both types work well and should be selected primarily on the look you want.

Flower basket guidelines

Planting hanging baskets is as easy as planting any potted plant but there are a few tips that should be kept in mind to keep your flowers growing.

Use a hanging basket that is at least 14 inches. Regardless, you'll need to water frequently but anything smaller will dry out too quickly. If your plant does completely dry out, submerge the hanging basket in water and let it absorb as much water as it can handle.

A soil mixture that retains water and is lightweight is ideal for hanging baskets. Proper soil selection will ensure your plant gets the water it needs while still being light enough to hang up.

Be sure to rotate the hanging basket so that all sides of it get sun. If you find yourself forgetting to rotate your plants, models with swivel hooks are also available that do the job for you.

If your outdoor area doesn't receive a lot of light, choose plants that thrive in low amounts of sunlight or shade. If it does get a lot of sun, be sure to choose plants that will prosper.
