Hangin' out
Selecting your outdoor plant hangers
There is a wide variety of plant hangers available for use outdoors. You should select a hanger based on the plants you'll be planting and the look you want to achieve. The bigger the root system, the bigger and deeper plant hanger you'll want. Iron plant hangers are available as well as hangers fashioned out of plastic, wire, wood, and cloth, as well as many other materials. Keep these tips in mind when selecting the outdoor plant hangers that you will use.
Plant selection: How large will your plants be when they are mature? Make sure you've selected a plant hanger that will be big enough as your plant develops.
Sun exposure: Will your plant be out in the hot sun all day? If so, select a bigger basket so it doesn't dry out as fast. The material it's made out of also makes a difference as some material hold moisture better than others.
Watering: If you won't be able to water your plants every day, be sure to select a plant hanger that has a drip tray or reservoir so the plant can soak up water as it's needed.
Climate: If your plant hanger will be staying outside during the winter months, a container that handles frost, like stone, cement, and wood, should be used. Plastic plant hangers will often crack or break during harsh winters.
Use: Some outdoor plant hangers may need to be moved around throughout the year. A deck plant hanger will often need to be moved for convenience or perhaps to capture additional light. If that's the case, be sure to select a plant hanger that isn't too heavy.
Hanging your outdoor plant hangers
Care should be taken when mounting your outdoor plant hanger to prevent injury. Whether a deck plant hanger or basket hanging on the eave of your home, careful consideration should be taken to make sure it is mounted securely. Make sure the material that your basket is hanging from, as well as the hook holding it, is strong enough. Don't forget that a wet basket will weight more than a dry one.
